We are a 3 section school in all grades except 2 and 3, where we have 4 sections each. this allows us to maintain smaller class sizes. We average 17 students in kindergarten, 21 in first grade, and 22 in second through fourth grade. No Frost Lake classes are larger than 30 students.

Reading instruction is delivered in a reading block configuration. Reading groups are 3 to 10 students in size and 60 minutes in length. All classroom teachers as well as our English Language Learner (ELL) teachers participate in reading instruction. Students use leveled readers to improve their fluency or the amount of words they read per minute. The McGraw-Hill basal reader is also used to expose them to authentic literature from here and other cultures.

Math instruction is delivered by homeroom teachers in grades K-4. In fifth grade, all math instruction is delivered by Ms. McCrossan. These grades use the Everyday Mathematics curriculum which has group, pair and individual work. In the sixth grade, students use the middle school program, CMP math, taught by Mr. Jan Stafford.

Students also have classes with specialists in music, physical education, art and science. Each classroom grades 1-4 receive 1 week a month of each special subject. Grades 5 and 6 students who choose, have band instruction instead of a week of music. Classroom teachers sign up tfor the computer lab to work independently or with the school's technology specialist. Students check out books from the media center once a week.

Our Learning Center has 4 classrooms and there is an primary autism self contained room as well as an intermediate one. Students who are able spend part of the day in the mainstreamed classrooms. There are specialists in basic skills, gifted and talented, global studies and technology who can team teach with all classroom teachers.

We invite you to come on a tour and see the classrooms for yourself.

Volunteers in our classrooms

Staying Power, a group of retired educators volunteer in our kindergartens and Ms. Brink's first grade classroom. These individuals work tirelessly with students in basic skills. Other volunteers include parents and grandparents of our current and past students. We all say, "Thank you" for helping our students.

Special Programs
Our kindergarteners have Junior Achievement volunteers coming in during the year. Each year, fifth graders participate in the DARE program offered by the Saint Paul Police Department. Kindergarten, first, second and third grade read books at school and at home in the Koalaty Kid program. Third grade also participates in READO, another reading incentive program.
